The SAG Awards: Hollywood Gets Political

January 31, 2017

One of the final award shows of the season was hosted on Sunday night in Los Angeles. The Screen Actors Guild Awards coincided with protests at LAX, and other major airports across the US, which saw thousands rally against Trump's outrageous "travel ban". The widespread upset created by this Executive Order was evident at the awards ceremony. Nearly every actor accepting awards spoke out against the ban, with some statements more direct than others (take Simon Helberg's sign and Jocelyn Towne's chest, for example).

[Disclaimer: For those concerned, I did think about avoiding political topics on my fashion blog, considering I'm obviously highly unqualified...but then I remembered that a reality TV star is the current Leader of the Free World. So, since qualifications are no longer of importance, I will continue to go about writing my "FAKE NEWS". ]

Emma Stone took home yet another award for her performance in the popular musical La La Land. Surprisingly, however, Denzel Washington was presented with his first SAG award for his role in Fences - a film which he also directed. Taraji P. Henson gave a beautiful speech about unity, when accepting an award on behalf of the cast of Hidden Figures. Both Ashton Kutcher and Julia Louis-Dreyfus joined her in speaking with passionate and welcoming words, in retaliation to Trump's deplorable travel ban.
