Spring/Summer 2014 Style

April 18, 2014

We are now well into April, and while the weather may still be cold wherever you are, the seasons are beginning to change. I, for one, am certainly ready for a whole new spring wardrobe. Here are some tips on the trends for this Spring/Summer 14.

1) Rainbow

With spring comes colour, and this season it can be easily incorporated into your closet. At Chanel, colour was splashed across the clothes like a paint palette. Coloured stripes were seen on dresses at Emilia Wickstead, styled with matching shoes. Two toned skirts were paired with a simple blouse and coloured shoes at Roksanda Ilincic. Whichever way you chose to wear it, make sure that your spring wardrobe is splashed with plenty of colour.

2) Modern Monochrome
Monochrome has been passed on from season to season, however, at the SS14 shows, it was seen with a more modern twist. Monochrome optical illusions were seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs, while Roksanda Ilincic and Victoria Beckham both showcased monochrome through layering.

3) Perfect Pleats
Sharp pleats could be seen across all catwalks during Fashion Month. For a daytime look, channel Alexander Wang's more girly, classic pleats. Take the pleats to night-time, through metallic skirts as seen at Antipodium and Proenza Schouler.

4) Heavy Metal

Metallics have remained trendy this season. At Dolce and Gabbana, pure gold looks were showcased, whereas more casual copper and purple tones were seen at Givenchy and Haider Ackermann.

5) Bare Midriffs
Hit the gym and tone those abs so you can follow this cool crop top trend. For a casual but cute summer look, wear a matching bralette and high waisted shorts as seen at DSquared 2. For an alternate, dressier look, wear a monochrome crop top and pencil skirt, seen at Kenzo, or a chic, all white look shown at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi.

6) Sportswear
This season sporty is in, but rather than wearing your tennis whites, why not try a bomber and shorts, mixed at Emilio Pucci, or matching at Marc by Marc Jacobs. Alternatively, channel a girlier look by wearing Tommy Hilfiger's sports-jersey style dress.

7) Tribal
Tribal looks stormed the catwalks this season. Whether it's fringe as seen at Emilio Pucci and Roberto Cavalli, or an Aztec style cape such as Valentino's, make sure you follow the tribal trend this summer.

8) Florals
Flowers may be a stereotypical spring/summer pattern, but this season the trend has changed. Christopher Kane's scientific diagrams are a very modern take on the floral trends. Both Dolce and Gabbana and Mary Katrantzou adapted the trend through embellishment.

9) Sheer
The sheer trend is one of my favourites this season. At Burberry Prorsum, the sheer shirt and lace skirt are very feminine, and the pastel tones make the look a touch more summery. The all black look at Saint Laurent is a very powerful, night time option. If you're feeling very confident, try Simone Rocha's totally transparent top.

10) Summer Coats
Designers this season were very practical in incorporating coats for the chillier spring/summer nights. Alexander Wang took a new take on the classic trench coat, whereas both Céline and Prada splashed colour on their coats this season.

11) Embellishment
Embellishment is key this season. Emilio Pucci's totally embellished dress is a gorgeous night-time look. At Louis Vuitton, embellishment was used to cover up all the right places on a mesh jumpsuit, while Simone Rocha's embellishment added the perfect touch to an all white look.

12) Denim
Denim is back. Channel this season's new look in Balmain's boiler suit or DKNY's dungarees.
13) Gingham
No longer a pattern for tablecloths, gingham is a must-have pattern this season. At Balmain and Carven the look was girly in pale pink hues, whereas Moschino took the punk route in black, white and red.
14) Typography
Typography is in this summer, with explicit warnings on Alexander Wang's sheer jumpers, Coca-Cola logos at Ashish and DKNY splattered all over her clothes.
